This project aims at development of biocatalysts for enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) with high activity and long lifetime. We plan to design and synthesize redox enzymes with graphene to construct biocatalysts. Enzymes which can catalyze oxidation of fuel molecules such as glucose and alcohol, reduction of dioxygen will be chosen as targeted enzymes for bioanodes and cathodes, respectively.
The project will construct biocatalysts with a large surface area in 3 dimensions (3D) to confine enzymes and increase their stability and electron transfer efficiency.
iTran is a collaborative project between the FORCE center at Chalmers university in Sweden and the SPOC center at DTU in Denmark addressing the growing challenges of sustainable technology for the future internet. The complementary expertise of the centers allows the iTran project to develop novel and high-level solutions for energy-efficient wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical data transmitter.
We are searching for a PhD student who will work on designing integrated optical modulators to be combined with integrated frequency comb sources.
The PhD student will explore designs for merging comb-generators with an integrated bank of data modulators, fabricated in state-of-the-art silicon photonics foundries, allowing for fully integrated light sources and modulators for future WDM systems.

We run projects combining big data and laboratory research via the national supercomputing center or Computerome and the molecular genomics laboratories.
Initial evidence suggests that fully and semi-automatically collection of behavioural data from patients suffering from mental disorders can help in treatment, care, and in predicting the onset of mental episodes.
However, data, analysis, and predictive power from current studies are very limited due to a small number of subjects (typically 5-20), a narrow disease focus, lack of standardized data formats, and no generalizable analysis methodology. Scientific reproducibility is also inhibited by lack of access to data from such studies.
This project will provide a platform for open-access data collection, sharing, and visual analytics of behavioural data collected from wearable and mobile sensors with a special focus on mental health.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position on the subject of "Micromechanics of 3D-printed Metals”. The PhD project has a strong emphasis on solid mechanics, mainly plasticity theory, fracture mechanics, numerical modelling and experimental testing.
This 3-year PhD project is concerned with micromechanical modeling and experimental testing of 3D-printed metals. The aim of the project is to establish a link between metal microstructure characteristics obtained by selective laser melting and strength properties such as yield strength and fatigue resistance. To this end, both experimental and numerical techniques are to be employed.

The Centre for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) at the Department of Electrical Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in Optimal Dispatch and Online Control of Integrated Energy Systems.
In order to realize the long term goal of renewables based energy systems, the synergy between electricity, heat and gas will have to be explored. The interactions among different energy sectors will provide more flexibility required by the future renewable energy system.
This PhD project will study the flexibility and ramping requirements of integrated energy systems. Optimal dispatch and online control algorithms will be developed for multi-time-scale operation of the integrated energy systems based on model predictive control.

The project focuses on obtaining a molecular understanding of the freeze-drying (lyophilization) process of protein formulations.
The challenge with these freeze-dried formulations is that proteins are exposed to an environment far from physiological conditions. The lyophilization is a complex process that generates stress to the structural integrity of proteins. This stress is caused by for instance changes in the physicochemical properties of the solution during the freeze-drying process (e.g. increased ionic strength, change in pH).
In connection with our newly granted research project ‘MIMIO – Microstructures, microbiota and oral delivery’ from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, we are looking to fill two PhD positions.
In MIMIO, we intend to design, realize and characterize micrometer-sized containers for the oral administration of probiotics with the vision of using them, for example, in the treatment of colitis. The project is based on a close collaboration between DTU Nanotech and DTU Food, and activities cover areas such as design optimization, microfabrication and in vivo experiments.
Both PhD projects demand a large degree of cross-disciplinary thinking and handling of micrometer-sized devices. Nanostructured 2D materials have fascinating electronic and optical properties. With the present project, our goal is to be able to fabricate and then combine different nanostructured 2D materials by using controlled stacking, exploiting van der Waals interactions for keeping the layers together.
A mind-boggling number of combination possibilities are possible, and the properties of the resulting stacks are expected to be just as varied.
