This position is based in Uppsala, where Thermo Fisher develops, manufactures, and markets complete blood test systems to support the clinical diagnosis and monitoring of allergy, asthma and autoimmune diseases. A day in the Life:

As the Instrument & Consumable Sustainability Engineer, you will contribute to our sustainability roadmap, integrating sustainability into product development and driving cultural shifts within Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Immunodiagnostic Division. You will work on strategy creation, capability development, process/tool incubation, and change management. Additionally, you will serve as a Mechanical Engineer, developing mechanical designs and solutions for instrument products. Your focus will be on our design language DfS and the five impact areas: less hazardous, less waste, more energy efficient, responsibly packaged, and extended life. You will collaborate with the DfS team, share design guidelines, and ensure customer requirements are met. Your work will be based in Uppsala, primarily focusing on allergy testing instruments.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent within Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical subject.

Experience

  • Developing mechanical design specifications and solutions for instrument products, including injection molding, die casting, pneumatics, automation.
  • Creating instructions and test methods to ensure efficient production of instrument products.
  • Collaborating across functions to meet requirement specifications.
  • Conducting prototyping, assembly, and testing (in-house workshop)
  • Ensuring compliance with international regulatory requirements for product development and design activities, including supporting regulatory and quality management inspections.
  • Following department procedures and instructions
  • Participating in troubleshooting and improvements activities for instrument products.
  • Experience in data-driven decision-making for development.
  • Familiarity with life cycle assessments and LCA software such as GaBi or similar.
  • Knowledge of relevant EU Sustainability directives and laws
  • Understanding of recycling practices for materials and components
  • Applying design rules for sustainable material choices

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Proficient in 3D-CAD software, preferably Creo and Solidworks.
  • Capable of working independently and taking ownership of processes, projects, and timelines.
  • Knowledge and experience in Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Skilled in cross-departmental collaboration within a matrix organization.
  • Strong self-leadership abilities, including team leadership and presentation skills.
  • Results-driven and team-oriented, with the ability to influence outcomes as needed.
  • Good organizational and time management skills, adept at handling multiple concurrent business activities.
  • Comfortable in an international and dynamic work environment, with strong English language skills.
  • Enjoys working in a collaborative team that values fun and mutual support in creating exceptional products.
