The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as disease ecology. Subject area for the position: Ecology with focus on bioremediation and microalgal applications Location until further notice: Kalmar Hours and term: Employment according to post-doc agreement, full-time for 2 years Starting date: Starting date as agreed upon Job description Your work as a postdoc will primarily consist of research in aquatic ecology and industrial ecology. You will be expected to participate actively in the department’s knowledge environment and networks, both internally and externally. The Post Doc scholarship is part of the research group Marine Plankton Ecology and Applications and the multidisciplinary project ALGOLAND, which aims to develop biological solutions to address major societal challenges such as climate change, eutrophication and food/feed production in the Baltic Sea region. Microalgae are used to clean industrial waste streams, such as flue gas or process water and the biomass evaluated as animal feed supplement. The project is a close collaboration between academia and industry and has competence within biology, ecology, environmental science, sustainable development and economy. We seek a highly motivated Post Doc with a strong background in bioremediation, microalgal applications or biotechnology engineering. The work involves the evaluation of autotrophic, mixotrophic and heterotrophic cultivation to recover nutrients and CO2 from industrial waste streams, using existing pilot-scale photobioreactors. And in collaboration with regional energy- and pulp industry evaluate the feasibility and cost efficiency of implementing microalgal solutions within forest-based industry. The research will be conducted in collaboration with other scientist within the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) at Linnaeus University Teaching and supervision, comprising no more than 20% of the total workload, may be included among your duties. Qualifications Anyone who has a doctorate in bioremediation, ecology or biotechnology engineering, or who has a degree from another country that is equivalent to a doctorate in bioremediation, ecology or biotechnology engineering, qualifies for the position. In accordance with the postdoc agreement, applicants who were awarded their degree no more than three years prior to the last application date for the present position should be considered first. An applicant must not previously have been employed as a postdoc for more than a year within the same or a related subject area at Linnaeus University. In order to qualify for the present position, the applicant must also have • Very high proficiency in academic writing and spoken Swedish and/or English • B-drivers license Assessment criteria Documented experience of bioremediation using microbial communities and/or algal solutions Documented experience in analytical methods, such as flow cytometry, biochemical analyses of biomass, metabolite screening, water quality assessment, molecular techniques Documented experience in data analyses and statistics A postdoc is part of a research team; consequently, flexibility and an ability to cooperate and collaborate are given great importance.
