This is us, your colleagues At Volvo Materials Technology in Gothenburg we are a team of about 40 engineers that supports the development of Volvo’s products by providing our specialist knowledge in materials and mechanical testing. To enable this, we have our own state-of-the-art laboratory within materials analysis and testing. The team act as a global internal consultant service within Volvo Group, having various stakeholders and therefore dealing with a wide variety of components, parts, and materials. We improve the experience and quality of Volvo Groups products by solving field and production issues, supporting in product development, and supplier quality selection including sustainability demands. About the role You will be a member of the Mechanical Testing and Screw Joining Technology team where you will act as a technical expert within mechanical testing and material mechanics. You will predominantly perform different types of monotonic and cyclic testing. As the variety of components we handle is large, as example from tensile bars from engines, screw joints, to understand how a pressure hose or electrical cables behave under specific loading conditions, you will have to devise your own test methods and design special test fixtures. You are expected to take a central role in solving issues together with colleagues from different parts of the Volvo Group and provide technical knowledge and recommendations within the organization. The job also includes to drive the contact towards stakeholders, perform project planning, reporting, and assure that we as a specialist group keep knowledge of the latest state-of-the-art methods and best practices in the field. In this role, you will also take part in the continuous improvement of the laboratory, thus being responsible for equipment, maintenance, and method development. Who are you? We believe that you are a solution-oriented person who enjoys working cross-functionally and building relationships, as you will have direct contact with your stakeholders that they may have a technical or non-technical background. Taking own initiatives and driving assignments forward is natural for you. You have a positive mind-set and can-do attitude, with very good verbal and written communication. Analytical thinking using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems is something you can show experience of. You adapt easily in quick-moving environments where plans and prerequisites can change on short notice, as new tasks may sometimes become top priority if critical issues arise somewhere in the company. To be successful in this role you have hands-on experience from mechanical testing and are able to yourself prepare, perform, and evaluate the tests needed to solve the different assignments you will get. Knowledge from solid mechanics is needed to be able to understand results and have dialogs with simulation teams. Other qualifications are: * M.Sc. Or similar in Materials Science or Solid Mechanics. * Five years relevant work experience. * Work experience within the area of mechanical testing. * Proficient in the use of relevant laboratory equipment and knowledge in the development of methods for examination and applied mechanical testing. * Knowledge in mechanical failure mechanisms, failure modes, and material deformation behavior. * English proficiency, both written and spoken. Swedish is a merit. It is considered a merit if you have knowledge in structural analysis, FEM, and CAD. Prior experience from the automotive industry is also a plus.
