The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 240 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor's, Master's and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.


Information about the project
The "Interactive 3D Deformable Bodies" project, funded by the Swedish Research Council, is about designing new data structures and algorithms to obtain more accurate animations of deformable bodies in real-time. This will be achieved by leveraging the computational capabilities of the graphics cards mounted on consumer-class PCs (GPUs). These devices have been designed to handle millions of pixels in parallel; recently they have been modified to compute generic scientific data and have proven to achieve 10X – 100X speed ups compared with the most recent CPUs.

Information about the position
We are seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student in the research area of Computer Graphics with a special focus on Computational Animation. This area combines research in computer graphics, visualization, optimization, and massively parallel algorithms.

Candidates with demonstrated experience and a high quality publication record on physics-based animation, computational animation and relative topics are of particular interest. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Major responsibilities
The objective of this project is to study and advance the current state of interactive physics-based animation to replicate the motion and the properties of soft objects like cloth, fabric, hair, skin, etc. The hired Ph.D. student will get international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral training in scientific and transferable skills. The student is expected to advance the current state-of-the-art achieving an excellent publication record, by performing research within the division. The position includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels to a certain extent.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

1) A master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field
2) An academic track record documented by CV and publications
